The First Secretary of the Embassy of Greece in Japan Mr. Thanos Kafopoulos was invited by the Japan National Press Club to give an introductory speech before the screening of the movie in order to explain to the Japanese audience the history and cultural identity of the Greek Americans.

The movie is about the Greek – American family, tradition and daily life. Toula Portokalos falls in love with Ian, a WASP non-Greek and struggles to get her family to accept her eager fiancé while she herself comes to terms with her heritage.

The presentation of Greek American life and family in this film is, of course, exaggerated since it is after all a comedy. Nevertheless, some of the basic themes in the movie are relevant, although less so today than thirty years ago.

The movie’s appeal lies in the fact that it deals with the problems of the Greek – Americans and their struggle to maintain their identity in the US. An Italian – American, Japanese – American, Chinese – American, Jewish – American etc could easily identify himself or herself with the basic themes touched upon in this movie. In this respect, one may understand why “Big Fat Greek Wedding” was such a big hit not only in the USA but also in other countries with large Greek communities such as Australia, Germany, U.K., South Africa and, last but not least, Greece. There are 7 million Greeks living outside Greece.

Ακριβώς γι' αυτό το λόγο, το ότι δηλαδή η κάθε εθνική κοινότητα μπορεί να ταυτίζεται με το έργο, το έργο παύει να έχει κάποια ιδιαίτερη σχέση με την Ελληνική κοινότητα αλλά γίνεται έργο δημιουργών Ελληνικής καταγωγής. Πιστεύουμε γι'αυτό δεν θα έπρεπε ο εκπρόσωπος του Ελληνικού κράτους να μιλήσει για τγο έργο. Αλλά να μιλήσεις για κάτι πρέπει και να δημιουργήσεις και όπως είπαμε αφού δεν υπάρχει τίποτα καλύτερο, απ' το ολότελα...

The Greek American community in the US numbers about 3 million people (500,000 in New York, big communities in Chicago, Boston, California and Florida). The most famous concentration of Greeks is in New York, especially “Astoria” (Greek – town) which is situated in the borough of Queens. If one visits Astoria he gets the impression that he/she is in Greece itself, as many signs are in Greek and the place is full of greek-style tavernas, coffee shops etc.

Έτσι λοιπόν όσοι τρώνε σε Ελληνικού τύπου ταβέρνες πίνουν ούζο και τρώνε σουβλάκι είναι Έλληνες εξ ορισμού. Αλλά έτσι τον καταλαβαίνουν τον Ελληνισμό πολλοί Ελληνοαμερικάνοι. Βεβαίως ο κλασσικός όρισμός του Ελληνισμού όπως τον έγραψε ο Ισοκράτης είναι... κάπως διαφορετικός.

The first Greeks came to the US in the late 18th century. The big wave of migration occurred in the late nineteenth century when there was an agricultural crisis in Greece (sharp fall of the price of raisins), which caused the first mass exodus of Greeks to America, Australia and South Africa. This emigration continued until the late 60s.

Δυστυχώς κάπως έτσι είναι. Οι Έλληνες έχουν την ατυχία να γεννιούνται σε ένα δοξασμένο τόπο αλλά να μην μπορούν να ζήσουν σαν άνθρωποι στον τόπο τους αφού κάποιες δυνάμεις και οι πολιτικοί όλου του φάσματος που τις υπηρετούν φροντίζουν γι' αυτό.


Famous Greek – Americans include: Spyro Agnew, Vice President of the USA under the Nixon administration, George Stephanopoulos, principal adviser to former President Clinton, Mike Dukakis, Democratic Party candidate for 1988 Presidential elections, Pete Sampras, famous tennis – player, Telly Savalas (“Kojak”), actor, Olympia Dukakis, Costas Gavras, Film Director, George Tenet, General Director of the CIA. Also, currently there are 2 Senators and four members of the House that are Greeks Americans. We should not forget, furthermore, that Aristotle Onassis, the famous Greek tycoon – shipowner, married Jackie Kennedy – Onassis.

Να μην ξεχάσουμε και τους άλλους σαν τον πρέσβυ των ταξιαρχιών θανάτου στην Κεντρική Αμερική Νεγρεπόντη και τώρα πρέσβυ στο Ιράκ, ούτε και τον πρόσφατα διάσημο στο Ιράκ αρχιβασανιστή Τομ Πάππα ούτε βεβαίως και τους πράκτορες της ΣΙΑ με σκοτεινούς ρόλους όπως ο Τομ Καραμεσίνης ή ο Τσάντες.


The main points in the movie could be summed up as follows: Greek pride about the history and the language of Greece, the language being the origin of Latin and English. The struggle of the Greeks to retain their identity and religion (Christian Orthodox). At the same time, the importance of the family and the strong desire of the Greek parents to make their children happy. And, finally and most importantly, the flexibility and good-nature of the Greeks, shown by how the father accepted in the end the WASP Anglo-Saxon husband since this would make his daughter happy.


Ακριβώς για τους παραπάνω λόγους θα έπρεπε ο κ. Α' γραμματέας να μην πεί λέξη αφού κάποιοι προκάτοχοί του, αυτός, αλλά και οι επόμενοί του έχουν φροντίσει να θάψουν την Ελληνική γλώσσα και τον πολιτισμό των Ελλήνων αφήνοντας την κηδεμονία του σε άσχετους και σε πλαστογράφους* ντόπιους σαμποτάροντας παράλληλα τους μη "βυσματωμένους" Έλληνες προς ώφελος των "δικών" μας παιδιών κα των "ημετέρων".

* Η αντιγραφή είναι ασιατική αρετή αφού ο καθένας κυττάει να αντιγράψει τον διπλανό του για να τον ξεπεράσει. Άλλωστε αυτό το γεγονός έχει επιτρέψει σε διάφορους ακαδημαϊκούς να αντιγράψουν ολόκληρα βιβλία, μεταφράζοντάς τα και παρουσιάζοντάς τα σαν δικό τους έργο.
